Giganews Review: The Basic Facts and Figures

The US Usenet provider Giganews has been on the market since 1994 (!) and is probably one of the oldest providers. Giganews is not a reseller of a larger network, as is often the case, but operates and maintains the Usenet servers itself.

There is no limitation of download volume or speed. So you can download as much content as you want at full speed. Here, Giganews can fully convince - however, there are also two points that have led to a point deduction in the rating. Firstly, the retention - i.e. the storage period of the uploaded content is very low at around 1,000 days. Other providers such as Usenext offer 3,500 days, while Prepaid Usenet, for example, offers 1,800 days. The provider still needs to improve here.

Secondly, the in-house software "Mimo Usenet Browser" did not convince us. It seems outdated, and the search function is only average. However, this point can be quickly eliminated with another newsreader - in conjunction with a better newsreader, such as Momentum, Giganews becomes a high-speed paradise for all those for whom low prices and high download rates are more important than high retention.

Most important key data

  1. Unlimited flat rate
  2. SSL encryption included
  3. 100 simultaneous connections possible
  4. Extremely high data rates
  5. VyprVPN without logging
  6. 14 days free trial
  7. The flatrates without limit cost from about 10€/month and are therefore very cheap in comparison.

Rates and Payment Options

Similar to prepaid Usenet, Giganews uses the prepaid method for rates - so you always order and pay in advance for exactly what you want. Packages can be cancelled at any time. You can order an unlimited flat rate for one, 6, or 12 months - the longer you commit, the lower the monthly fee.

The packages can be paid for by credit card and Paypal. However, we were unable to find the latter payment option in our test - but according to the FAQ, payment via Paypal is possible.

Current offers

Of course, you can also test Giganews free of charge for the first time: each package can be tested for 14 days without obligation and free of charge. No costs are guaranteed during the test period, but if you do not want to continue using the service after the test period, you must cancel your account.

Conclusion

For users who download an extremely large amount, Giganews is worth considering. The inexpensive flat rate tops all providers in terms of costs, download volume, and speed. However, users have to make do with a retention period of about 3 years - older content is therefore no longer accessible. If you are more interested in current content and are looking for an affordable flat rate, Giganews is the perfect Usenet provider. However, we recommend switching to a different newsreader, and we would also like to see additional payment methods besides credit cards.
